UPCOMING COURSES
Novel Incubator: The goal of this 12-week course is to dive deeply into your novel project. Each week you will write or revise up to 22 pages and receive feedback from me. You will meet one-on-one with me four times throughout the course to discuss your project, and we will have three course meetings where we’ll discuss novel setups and shapes, as well as next steps, including finding the right agent. By the end of the course, you will have a novel pitch and up to 240 pages of your project written. Together, we’ll read and analyze the structure of Percival Everett’s Telephone, a book that was produced in three versions, each with slight variations, including different endings.
Course Meetings: Wednesdays Feb 18, Mar 25, and May 6, 6-8pm PST over Zoom
Course Cost: $1000 ($900 if you sign up before Jan 1st)
Speculative Fiction: Speculative fiction can be many things—a horror, a far-flung dystopia, an alien invasion, a new technology with unintended effects, a faery handbag, a visit to hell! Writers of speculative fiction bend the rules of the world to get at a deeper truth. In this four-week course, we’ll study great works of contemporary speculative fiction from writers such as Paolo Bacigalupi, R. F. Kuang, Kelly Link, Chana Porter, and Rachel Yoder, with a focus on craft concepts like world-building, characterization, plot, and commentary. We’ll talk about how to build a story from a character’s relationship to the rules of the world, and we’ll discuss genre tropes and reader expectations, examining how writers subvert or upend those expectations to create something new. By the end of the course, students will conceptualize their own pieces and write their own story setups, building a foundation for a speculative work with feedback from the group and guidance from the instructor.
Course Meetings: Thursdays Jan 22-Feb 12, 6-8pm PST over Zoom
Course Cost: $350
