UPCOMING COURSES

Novel IncubatorThe goal of this 12-week course is to dive deeply into your novel project. Each week you will write or revise up to 22 pages and receive feedback from me. You will meet one-on-one with me four times throughout the course to discuss your project, and we will have three course meetings where we’ll discuss novel setups and shapes, as well as next steps, including finding the right agent. By the end of the course, you will have a novel pitch and up to 240 pages of your project written. Together, we’ll read and analyze the structure of Percival Everett’s Telephone, a book that was produced in three versions, each with slight variations, including different endings.

Course Meetings: Mondays Sep 22nd, Oct 27th, and Dec 15th, 6-8pm PST over Zoom

Course Cost: $1000 ($900 if you sign up before Sep 1st)

Who Tells the Story? A Generative Course on Perspective: Who tells the story? It’s one of the most important questions we can ask as writers. In this 8-week class we’ll read and study some fabulous works of fiction from various points of view, and we’ll dig into the concepts of narrative un/reliability and distance. In a good story, a writer WILL shift in narrative distance, getting closer or further from their characters, and those shifts can have powerful impact, complicating the story. Together, we’ll explore techniques used to manipulate narrative distance, taking the reader inside/outside, near/far.

This is a generative course, so you’ll get prompts to test out fresh perspectives and play with narrative distance and reliability. Toward the end of the course, you’ll expand one of your pieces to a full short story or novel excerpt, and of course you’ll receive feedback at all stages from me. We’ll be reading Andrew Sean Greer’s novel, Less, as well as novel excerpts and short stories from Mona Awad, Chanelle Benz, Jamel Brinkley, Rita Bullwinkel, Anna Burns, Brian Evenson, Joshua Ferris, Samantha Harvey, Zoë Heller, Jay McInerney, Ayse Papatya Bucak, Miriam Toews, and Charles Yu.

Course Meetings: Tuesdays Oct 7-Dec 2, 6-8pm PST (no class 11/25) over Zoom

Course Cost: $650 ($585 if you sign up before September 1st)

Or, you can sign up for both classes for $1500 ($1400 if you sign up before September 1st).
