UPCOMING COURSES

The Horror! Horror and surrealism are not just for genre writers! They’re great tools for writers of literary realism too. Some scenes just benefit from horror vibes, like when you want to capture a character’s fear or uncertainty or disgust or awe, when you’d like an uncanny mood, a sinister atmosphere, a positively terrifying exchange of dialogue, etc. Also, writing horror is super fun.

Over the course of these 4 weeks, we’ll read novel excerpts and short stories that embrace horror vibes. These will largely come from works of literary realism (I guarantee you’ll be surprised by some of my choices), though we’ll blend in some material from the horror genre too. We’ll examine how these writers created horror vibes, and we’ll use our observations as a launching point for our own work.

I’ll be providing prompts to generate new material, feedback to guide you as you select one of your pieces to expand out into a short story or novel excerpt, and meet with you one-on-one to discuss your piece and a revision/publication plan.

Course Meetings: Wednesdays June 16-July 7, 6-8pm PST over Zoom

Course Cost: $350

All class sessions will be recorded. Follow this link to reserve your spot!

Novel Incubator: The goal of this 12-week course is to dive deeply into your novel project. Each week you’ll write or revise up to 20 pages and receive feedback from me. You’ll meet one-on-one with me four times throughout the course to discuss your project, and we’ll have three course meetings where we’ll discuss novel setups and shapes and deeply studying the construction of a well-crafted novel. By the end of the course, you’ll have a sharpened novel pitch and up to 240 pages of your project written.

Course Meetings: Thursdays June 18, July 23, September 3, 6-8pm PST over zoom

Course Cost: $1000 ($900 if you sign up before June 1)
